Search engine optimisation, or simply put - SEO, is the process of optimizing a site for better search engine placement and thus higher amounts of traffic. SEO consists of two categories of optimisation: on-page optimisation and off-page optimisation. Let's talk each of them and compare:
On-Page Optimisation
This is the category that refers to optimisation you do on your site. This can mean several things like proper use of keywords - in your site's content, title and links, freshly written search engine and user friendly content on a regular basis, easy navigation of your site, and quick loading of any page. Also, another important on page factor is the existence of a sitemap - a page where every link on your site is displayed so that search engine spiders can rank your pages easily.
Off-Page Optimisation
These are strategies that you apply off the pages of your website but which will directly benefit them. Generating incoming links with your keywords as link title to your site is what this category is all about. There are multiple ways to get links pointing to your site like: sending articles to directories, blogging, forum posting, social bookmarking or press releases.
On-Page or Off-Page?
Which is the most important category out of the two mentioned? The truth is both of them are very important although proper off-page optimization is without a doubt crucial to any site's ranking success. It is important to apply both strategies regularly, with caution, if you with to rank high for your chosen keywords.
